Ánte
This film tells the story of a Sámi boy, Ánte, who refuses to attend the Norwegian school in Kautokeino. The film can be interpreted as a depiction of Norwegianization.
“Ánte” was produced both as a TV series and a film and was released in 1975 and 1976. It became an artistic sucess, reaching 23 countries, including being broadcast on the BBC.
Screenwriter Tor Edvin Dahl aimed to portray Sámi culture from a Sámi perspective. The film was produced by Knut-Jørgen Erichsen/Centralfilm.
The main roles were played by Sverre Porsanger, Nils Utsi, Ellen Anne Buljo, Rasmus Somby, Odd Astrup, Johan Henrik Buljo, and Sigmund Sæverud.
Fun facts about the film is that its theme song, “Ánte,” was one of the most played songs in Norway for 14 weeks, and the Sámi band “Intrigue” later made a heavy metal version of the song “Eadni nieida”.
